Galatians 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. Psalm 78

2 Peter 3:8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him.
KEY POINTS
- We have all enjoyed it when we have received someone’s patience with us.
- If we understood the depths of God’s patience with us we would be motivated to extend it to others.
- The Person of the Holy Spirit, “Another Helper” who is now in us, reminds of and empowers us with the Presence of the Holy Trinity, whose character is patience.
- Patience is not the absence of Anger, but the restraint of it. God is “slow to anger” Exodus 34:6; “long-suffering” Gal. 5:22.
- God’s just and holy wrath toward sin is an element of His love. He hates sin and must judge it to be just. He loves the sinner (all of us) deserving his judgment. Jesus is God’s solution so that both His love and His justice are satisfied. The cross is His ultimate display of patience toward us in that Jesus bore our sin and incurred God’s wrath upon Himself in our place.
- As His adopted children now, we are no longer children of wrath, but sons of His love, receiving forgiveness, pardon, acceptance, His daily presence, power, growth into His likeness, including PATIENCE.
- “Outbursts of anger” is a deed of the old life, “flesh”, which the Holy Spirit will convict one of and replace with patience.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- Have you understood and appreciate the depth of God’s patience toward you?
- Have you stopped justifying outbursts of anger? If not, have you considered seriously Paul’s warning in Gal. 5:21?
- Do you understand that your fleshly nature will always need rendered crucified, and replaced with “shifted reliance” upon the Helper, who is now in you?
- Have you inventoried when you are most vulnerable to the flesh having its way?
- Have you renounced the old joke of not praying for patience because of what may come? Do you know that without shifted reliance in prayer for patience that you don’t stand a chance?
