Key Points

  • Five scenarios occur with people responding to their land allotments. Those who stood on God’s promise realized their requests.
  • Caleb’s daughter and nephew had the same courage as Caleb. We often see the fruit of our faithfulness fall on our decedents.
  • Othniel was later called on to be Israel’s deliverer and their first judge.
  • Joseph’s sons were not satisfied with their allotments but were not willing to apply effort or faith to procure it.
  • The four sisters were much like Caleb; they held fast to God’s Word (promise) and secured individual land allotments.
  • Courageous Caleb: bold, brave. God said so… let’s go!
  • Opportunistic Othniel: he was given a challenge and took it!
  • Assurance of Achsah: she could trust her Father to bless her.
  • Security of the sisters: these women contended for God’s promise and were given security.
  • The easy Ephraimites: entitlement sets in and causes laziness.

Discussion

  1. Are you standing on God’s promises?  Which one comes to mind?
  2. Can you relate to any of the 5 scenarios above? Why?
  3. Do you find yourself leaning more into yourself than the Holy Spirt of promise?
  4. Have you seen yourself grow into Christ like your ancestors? What legacy do you desire to leave for your children?
